If you want something go get it! Period!

Don’t ever let some someone tell you you can’t do something!
This clip from The Pursuit Of Happiness is what today’s blog is all about.
In the video Chis Gardner (Will Smith) tells his son how he was never very good at basketball and because of that his son wouldn’t be any good. So he didn’t want him wasting a lot of time playing basketball.
We all have people in our lives who love and care about us. They tell us what to do and what not to do based on their own life and experiences, thoughts and beliefs.
They do this for many reasons, here are some of the top reasons:
- They don’t want to see us fail: This is a very noble reason, however this can only hold you back from your true potential. In order to find successful, failure along the way is a necessity. If you took the time to research any great success story you would find dozens if not hundreds of mini failures along their path to success. Only with failure can we learn what works and what does not. Only with failure can you grow to a better you. Lack of failure will simply result in lack of success.
- They don’t want to see us succeed: Yes it’s sad to admit there are people out there who actually don’t want you to succeed. They discourage you simply because they lack the desire, motivation and or dedication to pursue their dreams. If they can’t achieve their dreams they don’t you to achieve yours.
- They are lazy or scared of failure: It’s much easier for them to sit back and say that doesn’t work than it is to take the time to make it happen. By discouraging you they don’t have to do anything.
- They lack the proper knowledge to intelligently discuss the topic: I think this is one of the biggest reasons. People love to have the answers and love to help out. Unfortunately, they too often share what little knowledge they have on the topic and assume it to be “The Law”. When in fact it is incorrect.
IE: “Your uncle Jimmy tried that, he said it was a big old scam, run away!”
I love this one, just because Uncle Jimmy tried and failed that means that no one in the world can succeed. I’m sure Uncle Jimmy has never failed at anything, he is likely Jimmy Carter, Jimmy Hoffa, and Jim Morrison all rolled into one. I’m sure he has succeeded at everything in the world except Network Marketing.
Hopefully you can sense my subtle sarcasm here.
The important thing to realize is each person’s success or failure is determined by their own actions, desires and dedication. Just because Uncle Jimmy failed that has no bearing on your outcome unless you allow it to. - They think it’s a scam: Here is a line I hear often that I love.
“More people fail at MLM than succeed.”
Umm hello, McFly…. LOL, more people fail at everything than they succeed. We as a society fail at far more than we succeed.
Millions of people try to lose weight and fail. Is this because they failed or because the weight loss industry is a scam.
Do people fail in Network Marketing? The answer is of course yes.
Do people fail to be the CEO, Regional Manager, VP. ETC? Again yes.
Do people fail to, be a rock star, professional basketball player? Once again yes.
People fail in brick and mortar businesses every day an they have way more invested. Why isn’t this industry considered a scam? After all they hire employees who’s efforts they earn income from. Sounds like a pyramid scam to me. LOL again some subtle sarcasm there.
Here is what I know:
You and only you have the power to succeed or fail.
Confusious said “He who thinks he can and he who thinks he can’t are both usually right“.
So my advice to you is:
Don’t ever let someone tell you you can’t do something. If you want something go get it, PERIOD!

Rob,
Great movie!
This is an awesome scene and he tells it like it is.
We all do have the power to succeed and we write our own book. It is
a decision we make and it is up to us to go out there and GET EM!
So…no matter what anyone says, I am going for it.

Hi Rob,
thanks for sharing this scene and your lessons from it. You are right: Most of the objections you mention are well-intended, but the opposite of good is well-intended, as Bertolt Brecht said.
There’s no reason why a child shouldn’t be able to reach goals that their parents weren’t able to reach, regardless if they really tried it or not. It’s entirely unrelated.
The entire human evolution is based upon this principle: Children are doing things their ancestors weren’t able to do or couldn’t even imagine. It’s called progress.
The other extreme is the following: Parents wanting their children absolutely succeed in something – probably against their will – they failed in or they every successful in. Parental over-ambition.
Take care

Hi Rob!
I LOVE this clip and the whole movie. Great of you to share it with us. I think one of the biggest problems with network marketing is that there is not enough commitment from people getting into it to make it work.
If you were to pay out $100K to $1M+ for a business start up you would have a plan and a no-matter what attitude. But since the initial investment is very low, it allows you to be flexible with your time, and you don’t have someone standing over you making you get your work done, most people don’t have the drive to make it work, or the respect for what this business can create.
I think a lot of people getting into network marketing don’t think of it as a REAL business. They don’t think of themselves a business owners and they aren’t willing to pay the prices for success…mainly personal development and becoming the person they need to be in order to be the leader people want to follow.
Again, great clip and awesome post! We’re due to get dumped on with snow tonight, so maybe we’ll have to curl up with a fire and watch the movie!

Hello Heather thanks for taking the time to share your words of wisdom. I agree with everything you said here. In addition the negative influence from so called friends will also slow people down and knock them off their horse. It has been sometime since I watched that movie all the way through, that sounds like a good idea. NetFlix here I come. LOL
Wow, I love this one Rob.
Especially the bit about the weight loss. It’s so true and that’s a great comparison.
I think a big one is fear. People are afraid to do it themselves, afraid THEY will fail. If they are afraid they’d fail if they try it, they feel compelled to share that fear with you.
Partly because the care, and partly because if you succeed, what does that say about them and their fear? It says they were wrong and no one enjoys being proven wrong.
Thanks for another great post!

Susanna great add you hit the nail on the head perfectly. No one ever wants to be wrong or to fail. So if they personally don’t try and they discourage you from trying they can not be proven wrong or fail. I do agree most mean well, it’s unfortunate that even though they mean well they are setting themselves and their friends up for a life of mediocrity. I firmly believe as more and more success stories are created people will take our industry more seriously. Thanks for adding great value to this post.
Hey Robert,
This is my favorite movie scene of all time. It brings tears to my eyes every time I see it. So very powerful. A very inspiring movie too of never giving up on one’s dream and triumphing against all the odds. Brilliant.
Thanks for sharing,

Awesome post Rob,
Thanks for sharing this scene.
“Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something. Not even me.”
the world is full of people who aren’t comfortable seeing others achieve things they don’t have the courage to attempt, and often those that love us confuse this with caring.
Either way, I couldn’t agree with your point more – If you want something, go get it, PERIOD!
All the best,

Hello Robert,
This is a very powerful message you are setting out here.
It is obvious that you want people to succeed and you wish to
empower them. I can’t think of a better thing you can do for anyone
than to help inspire them to succeed.
Keep up the good work,
Diane
Thanks for the kind words Diane, you are correct, my desire is to help to help as many people succeed as possible.
Life has been super fun and continues to be because of a line in my life exactly like this movies basketball part but the words where different.
This made a lot of people and teachers get in way throughout life, but I still remember these words.
If you want something out of life, You Got to kick it in the butt and take it. I took it as be afraid of nothing and no one. There is no one person stopping you other then you.
So I’ve been kicking life and the butt from day one, and I’ve never looked back building a business out of thin air was fun.
Now I’ve got tools to work with should be even a easier trip this time around.
My favorite quote is I’ve succeed to build something with nothing. Now I’m going after the impossible.
everything is possible because your mind allows it to be. Think about this statement please.
Your mind allows it to be. Your the one in control of your own destiny not anyone else.
When you give up that control it by choice. Never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do. Not even your own mind.
Welcome Monty, you make some great points,
“no can stop you but yourself.”
“Never let anyone tell you what you can and can’t do”
words to live by….
Thanks for your comment.

Hey Rob,
As soon as I saw the title of this post I was thinking that I was gonna bust out that Confucius quote and lo-and-behold there it was.. Gutted! lol
I’m a firm believer in seeking out what it is you want, be the rebel, make the mistakes, learn, make some more mistakes, share your experience so that others can make the same mistakes but hopefully with less calamity at the end!
Great post!

Hi Rob!
I love the title of your post! Especially the ending… “Period!” That’s so true! Quite often, others will discourage you from doing something because of their own fear and then they try to instill it in you.
If someone comes towards me with any of that I have two words for them – KICK ROCKS… because I don’t want to hear it! Keep your “can’t do it and negativity” to yourself.
Spreading sunshine on your page huh? LOL. Just my 2-cents! ;o)
Have an amazing week my friend!
